PTO Weight Gain
Ah yes, the coveted PTO that us salary workers live for. We strive to use it or loose it, but we have to be careful not to use it too early in the year should something pop up around Christmas and heaven forbid you have to take unpaid time off!
The first full week in June, the kid's school is closed for VBS. Since I would have to take the week off anyway, we decided years ago to make it our official family vacation week. Our beach of choice has always been St. Simons Island on the Georgia Coast. Anderson and I have been going since college and I absolutely adore going down there. (Honesly, it's where I want my ashes scattered!) I won't go in to all the reasons why we LOVE St. Simons, but one of them is because of the restaurants. There are a few staples that are must stops on our trips, Southern Soul, Barbara Jeans, Southern Soul again, Sandy Bottom Bagel, and Half Shell. We eat out nearly every meal, it can be expected that I'm going to pack on the pounds.
In the past, I have gained so much as 10 pounds over a weekend while on vacation. I will say, that was a wedding weekend up north, and involved A LOT of beer and dulce de leche desserts. Knowing my penchant to gain weight on vacation, and knowing I wasn't going to miss out on some deliciousness, I had to devise a plan not to be a huge fatty on vacation.
Luckily for this plan, I had already been working on my relationship with food and doing really well. I've also been seeing amazing results so that motivated me not to go hog wild. My plan was simple, eat breakfast, not over eat (put the fork down when full), go for healthier non fried options if I could, limit my bread in take, relax, and not overthink it.
My days looked mostly like this:
Breakfast: A macro bar
Lunch: Pimento Cheese Sandwich & Beer on the beach
Dinner: Grilled fish/Shrimp side of veg
Snacks: Pistachios
Obviously, not every day looked like this. There was a day where I had massive french toast for breakfast. WORTH IT. And a night where I ate fried catfish and drank a frose. Again, WORTH IT! I tried to stick with beer as my alcohol of choice. I know they are carb heavy, but they don't tend to hide calories and sugars like mixed drinks do. I will say I ate a ton of grilled shrimp, raw oysters, scallops, sweet potato fries, and crab cakes, so it's not too hard to be healthy and enjoy one's self while on a south Georgia beach vacation.
After all was said and done, I only gained three pounds. That's not terrible. I would tell myself daily, "Don't worry, you've got this. Don't feel guilty for enjoying yourself." Why didn't I worry or feel guilty? Because I had a plan for when I got back. I'll share that next!
